Description

Appearance

The two most common bats found in the area include the little brown bat and the big brown bat. They are familiar in appearance, though one is smaller than the other.

  • Wingspan ranging from 9-15 inches
  • Wings that are broad webbed hands
  • Short legs
  • Sharp claws
  • Large ears
  • Light tan or yellow to dark brown or black in color

Bats have the ability to make high-pitched squeaks that aid in navigation, communication, and to hunt for food.

Habitat

Bats will hang out during the day in groups number in the millions. They are nocturnal and will hang upside down by their feet in caves, hollow trees, attics, chimneys, walls, and bat houses. When dusk approaches bats will awaken and fly out to hunt for food. Bats will eat common pests, including mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, beetles, and moths. Due to their choice of diet, bats are commonly found roosting near bodies of water, like ponds, lakes, and pools.

Bat Control Problems

Bats inside homes are generally found roosting in attics, chimneys, or within the walls. Bats will enter homes as they enjoy dark and safe places to sleep during the day. During summer months, as bat pups are learning to fly, you may find one that accidentally entered your home through an open door or window.

Damage

Humans and bats peacefully coexist, for the most part. When you have a bat in the house, it is a different story. Bat droppings can harbor dangerous fungal spores that can lead to serious health problems, which if not treated promptly can be fatal. Bat droppings will also create terrible odors and stains that can be difficult to remove.

Trapping and Removal

Since bats may carry disease, untrained individuals should never approach them. Bats also bite and scratch when they feel threatened and can easily injure humans. Critter Control of Houston has the appropriate training to humanely remove any bat problems plaguing residential and commercial properties.

Damage Repairs and Prevention

Bats should never be picked up or grabbed, due to the risk of disease they may be carrying. In order to keep colonies of bats from roosting in attics, proper precautions should be taken to cover or seal all vents, holes, chimneys, windows, and gaps leading inside homes.
